DAY 1: Outdoor Play

Day 1 will present the philosophy and practice of working outdoors with children in the early years and explore the value of quality outdoor play in the development and learning of young children.

Participants will explore a range of teaching approaches and strategies:

  • how to plan for the outdoors, including supervision and risk management strategies
  • how to encourage and extend play - intentional teaching in the outdoor playspace
  • ideas to manage the behaviours that can disrupt play outdoors.

Participants will share ideas for provision of play that will allow centres to equip their outdoor play environments with no cost or low cost equipment and play props.

DAY 2: Environments for Outdoor Play

Day 2 will focus on developing environments for play that enhance the value of the outdoor program including plantings for play spaces and incorporating sustainability principles.

Participants will be given:

  • an overview of a range of design concepts to guide the construction and development of outdoor play spaces to maximise the value of the outdoor program
  • the implications of standards and regulations
  • ideas for natural environments:
    • plantings for play spaces
    • sustainable practices
    • environmental provisions such as butterfly and bird friendly gardens.

It is highly recommended that individuals and centres see these two days as a package and enrol for both
