Minister for Education Martin Dixon and Member for Carrum, Donna Bauer attended Kananook Primary School today for their ‘Grandparents’ Day’, to coincide with Children’s Week

Minister Dixon joined over 60 students from years 2 and 3 and their grandparents/special persons for the morning, along with Cathy Hope, author and International games expert.

During the morning the students and their guests played global games with an enduring history including hopscotch, elastics, jacks/knucklebones, skipping, string games, marbles, clapping games and hoops.Mr Dixon said that playing was so important that it was protected as a human right by the United Nations.“In 2013, Children’s Week shines a light on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and on what some commentators have called the forgotten article, which is every child’s right to play.” “The Victorian Government is happy to remind the community of this right during Children’s Week by supporting local councils, schools, early years services, libraries, galleries and cultural organisations to give Victorian children hundreds of opportunities to play, learn and have fun.” Donna Bauer was pleased to have the Minister visit Kananook Primary School.“It’s such a special morning to be able to witness the young children with their grandparents and guests spending time together and sharing and learning a whole range of games that are played across the globe”, Ms Bauer said.“I’m sure the grandparents would remember some of these games and it’s nice to see the children playing outdoors and challenging themselves”. Cathy Hope is a dedicated teacher with over 50 years experience educating students of all ages in primary school and has been a successful author of 27 educational books, for teachers and children, published from 1978 to 2008.Media Contact: Sara Brick 9772 4544.
