\n \nThis is the third rou nd in the series of three Play Summits that Play A ustralia will be hosting in 2026 to drive a nation al Plan4Play. Each summit will build on the learnings and work of the next.

Dr We ndy Russell is a Senior Research Fellow and an ind ependent researcher. Her research into children’s play focuses on the politics of space\, and playwo rk. She is a co-founder of the biennial internatio nal Philosophy at Play conference and is on the ed itorial board of the International Journal of Play .
\n \nCritical cartography\, as developed by Wendy\, treats mapping not as a way of recordin g places but as a way of revealing the relationshi ps\, power dynamics and material conditions that s hape opportunities for play. Through creative\, de liberately ‘inefficient’ mapping\, storying and di agramming\, Critical Cartography helps practitione rs to reflect on and reimagine play spaces\, suppo rting more equitable\, playful and responsive envi ronments. \n \nWendy’s research into therapeutic playwork explores how children\, playworkers\, ma terials\, animals and spaces come together to crea te conditions of safety\, joy and self-directed pl ay within therapeutic settings. By combining creat ive mapping with non-linear evaluation methods\, i t demonstrates the value of play as a relational\, process-based form of care while providing meanin gful evidence of its impact beyond conventional ou tcome measures. \n \nWendy has played a leading role in developing the Play Sufficiency Duty in Wa les\, creating practical\, relational tools that h elp local authorities assess and improve the condi tions that enable children to play.
