DAY 1- Contemporary Philosophy and the Role of the Outdoor Teacher

Day 1 will explore the value of informed philosophy and pedagogy when working outdoors with children in the early years.

Together, we will explore the educational and wellbeing benefits of engaging young children in outdoor play.

Participants will explore a range of strategies, theories and languages on how to build a robust outdoor curriculum all year around.

Additionally, participants will examine and reflect on:

  • Their role as an outdoor teacher
  • The spaces available for robust engagement in play and the environment as a teacher
  • Ways children play outdoors in their current context (social relationships, rough and tumble play, object and body play…)
  • Documenting children’s learning in the outdoor space.

DAY 2 - Considering Outdoor Play in Quality Improvement Planning

Day 2 will focus on weaving nature and sustainability curriculum and investigating contemporary ideas of the value of play.

Through networking and discussion, participants will:

Consider risk assessment and risk benefit in outdoor spaces

Explore the existing outdoor spaces and how they can be vigorously evaluated and improved

(design elements, shared ideas, visual tools and concepts will be used)
