This program will deliver the information required to meet the increasing concerns regarding the safety of children and young people in playgrounds and play spaces whilst strongly supporting the on-going development of exciting and challenging experiences for all children.

Day 1 – Play space design and development
Participants will receive an introduction to the value of play and the key elements of designing for outdoor play. This will provide increased knowledge and commitment to the importance of safety for children and young people in the use of playgrounds and play equipment.

Day 2- Management and Maintenance
Day 2 will provide details of the new Standard and key details of all other Standards pertinent to playspace management. The program will provide the knowledge required to enable people responsible for the management and operation of playgrounds to carry out their responsibilities appropriately.

By the end of the 2 days, participants will be able to:

  • understand the importance of play and identify major categories of play behaviour including how children with disabilities use playgrounds;
  • apply the current Australian Standards to the design of equipment and facilities
  • identify innovation in design and development of play opportunities for children, in particular, on issues relating to access to playgrounds for all groups of children;
  • understand impact area and ground surface issues and the role of shade
  • apply the hierarchy of rules and regulations
  • better manage playgrounds to protect organizations from liability;
  • differentiate between a risk and a hazard;
  • undertake a maintenance and safety inspection of a playground;
  • conduct a safety audit and structure a detailed safety audit report;
  • perform ongoing management of an asset: replace, repair, remove, associated costs, and
  • develop and operate an effective maintenance program

Details

Presenters will include people with leading expertise from across Australia. A range of training methods will be utilised to ensure that the program meets the needs of all participants. Presentations and on site case studies will be included. Lunch and morning tea will be provided (please advise in advance of any dietary requirements). All participants will receive training resources for on-going support.
