National State of Play Report

Play Australia is undertaking our first National State of Play Report.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) recognises that every child has the right to play. Playing is a right for children wherever they are – at home, in children’s services, in their local neighbourhood and at school.

The State of Play Report will be the first of its kind undertaken in Australia.

The aim will be to determine real play perceptions and practices of parents and children and gather insights and reflections from leaders in sectors with an interest in play from across Australia.

We believe this will enable us to determine where the greatest areas of concern and opportunity exist for play provision, and how we might best engage with parents to adopt real play philosophies in their daily lives.

The report will be a catalyst for discussion on the state of play in Australia and opportunities moving forward, as well as the precursor to the development of a national position statement on Outdoor Play.

The nation-wide survey of parents and children on their perceptions of play and participation in play will be launched Wednesday May 8. Both surveys are based on existing international models to allow the opportunity at a later date to look at comparisons between countries.

The survey questions for children will focus on aged 7-14-years. Both surveys will be distributed across Australis via social media and membership contacts. We are calling on our members to assist us get these surveys circulated as widely as possible. Survey closes on June 6 and we will make preliminary announcements on June 11 2024 as part of the International Day of Play.

In addition, we are undertaking a stakeholder scan of 30 people from different sectors with an interest in children and their play, gathering their feedback on the key aspects around play provision in Australia.

We are aiming to present a final report by July.
