Associate Professor Jill Sewell AM has spent a lifetime advocating for children's health, development, and well-being. As a highly respected developmental and behavioural paediatrician, she has led groundbreaking research on childhood play, early development, andthe evolving landscape of healthcare for young people.
A former senior leader at the Centre for Community Child Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Jill has championed the role of play in healthy childhood development, leading the National Child Health Poll study, ‘Australian Families: How We Play’ (2023). She is a firm believerin the power of play, not just as a source of joy, but as a fundamental pillar of health.
Opening the Health Stream at IPA Asia Pacific Play Conference. Jill will kick off the Health & Wellbeing stream at the IPA Asia Pacific Play Conference with a thought-provoking session on risky play. In a world increasingly focused on safety, are we protecting children at the cost of their development?
- Is thrill-seeking in play actually beneficial for physical and mental health?
- What’s the balance between necessary safety and stifling a child’s ability to explore, takerisks, and build resilience?
- Are we unintentionally harming children by making play “too safe”?
With her vast expertise in child health, clinical ethics, and medical education, Jill will challengeus to rethink our approach to risk, resilience, and adventure in childhood.
As a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and a leader in healthcare policy, education, andregulation, Jill’s influence extends far beyond the clinic. Her work continues to shape the futureof paediatric health, and this session promises to be an essential conversation for anyone passionate about children's well-being.
