Rethinking Cities Through Play – Day 1 Sessions

You Can’t Miss!

At the IPA Asia Pacific Play Conference 2025, we’re not just talking about play, we’re redefining its role in shaping cities, communities, and the lives of children. On Day 1 of the Urban Planning & Design stream, two powerful sessions will explore how play can be a catalyst for urban transformation.

Can Play Drive Broader Social Change? Christine Lee – Taiwan

For children, play is simple, it doesn’t need deeper meaning. But as advocates, designers, and policymakers, we have a responsibility to harness play as a tool for change.

Drawing on a decade of advocacy in Taiwan, Christine Lee will showcase how play has been used to drive child-centric urban design initiatives, from reimagining streets and public spaces to shaping family-friendly museums. Through real-world examples, she will reveal how integrating play into urban planning can create more inclusive, vibrant cities for children and families.

Hands-On Workshop: Designing for Play – aProCh’s Urban Interventions:
Kirti Zala – India

In many cities, children are losing their right to play due to urbanization, traffic, and lack of safe spaces. Ahmedabad’s aProCh initiative is changing that.

In this interactive workshop, Kirti Zala will take us inside aProCh’s play-based urban interventions, including:

  • Street Smart – Reclaiming streets for children
  • Parents of the Park – Revitalizing parks to encourage family play
  • Other play-centric programs creating child-friendly cities

Learn how these initiatives promote safety, exploration, inclusivity, and community-building, and discover strategies to bring similar concepts to your city or community.
