Play Australia is supported by the Department of Education and Training Victoria to provide advice and support to funded Early Years Services in Victoria on outdoor play, and in particular on the risk management of outdoor play areas, as per relevant Australian Playground Standards.

Risk management is featured in our regular Early Years Training Programs, however it is evident that there is an urgent need for an opportunity for services to access the latest information, given that there are new Standards applicable to all services throughout Australia.

Lunch and morning tea will be provided (please advise in registration process of any dietary requirements).

Car parking will be provided at no cost on site.

A set of material will be provided for each participant for ongoing reference.

What does it cost to attend the seminar?
Cost will be $180 incl. GST per member; and $320 incl. GST per non-member. Members will be sent a DISCOUNT CODE via email which can be inputted to receive the 140 dollars discount off the full price. Presenters

Dr Sue Elliott
Sue is a senior lecturer in early childhood education at the University of New England, NSW. She is a long-term advocate of education for sustainability and in particular, natural outdoor playspaces. Sue is an acknowledged author and researcher in the early childhood field; and, her publications include The Outdoor Playspace Naturally, Sustainability and the Early Years Learning Framework and Research in Early Childhood Education for Sustainability: International perspectives and provocations. She is a Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Early Childhood Environmental Education and has ongoing research interests in early childhood education for sustainability and ‘Bush Kinder’, a uniquely Australian interpretation of Scandinavian forest preschools.

Mary Jeavons
Mary has over 25 years’ experience in planning, design and advocacy for outdoor play, and for access and inclusion, applied to settings such as early childhood centres, schools, public play spaces, and therapeutic environments. Mary has represented Play Australia for many years on the Standards Australia Committee responsible for writing and reviewing the Australian Safety Standards for playground equipment and surfacing. She is very interested in the topic of risk/benefit management and its application to outdoor play environments for young children.

Elizabeth Cummins
Elizabeth is a qualified landscape architect and educator. She has spent many years working in private design practice, local government and education. In 2011 Elizabeth branched out to take her own creative project direction, called Bricolage Design specialising in design and strategic planning, particularly for children’s environments in regional Victoria. A passionate advocate for free play, Elizabeth is a founding coordinator of the Creative Cubby Project, a regional play initiative. In 2015 Elizabeth co-authored Getting the Balance Right – Risk Management for Play for Play Australia. She has most recently been a contributing editor for the international publication How To Grow A Playspace; Design and Development due to be published by Routledge Publishers UK in 2017 She speaks and blogs regularly on play and projects for children. www.bricolagedesign.com.au

Joey Boothby
Joey is a Senior Recreation Planner at Manningham City Council in Melbourne.  She has worked in Local Government for over 15 years and has a keen interest in encouraging the community to spend more time outdoors, in nature and being more physically active.  Joey has co-written a number of key Council strategies including the Active for Life Recreation Strategy, Manningham Open Space Strategy and Playspace Strategy.  Joey has a particular passion for bush kinder and nature play and was instrumental in the establishment of the first bush kinder in Victoria (Westgarth Bush Kinder).  Joey believes strongly in the concept of in ‘risk benefit’ and contributed to ‘Play Australia Getting the Balance Right - our new Guide for Risk Management’.

Cecile van der Burgh
Cecile is a human geographer based in Melbourne and a co-founder of the Kids In Nature Network. She has worked in nature conservation for over fifteen years and recently completed a PhD in connectivity conservation. Born and raised in The Netherlands, Cecile spent most of her childhood playing outside. She continues to explore the world (and risk taking) by foot, bike, sail and through music. She is a fellow of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership and a recipient of the Mary Byles Award. Nature Play Week, Kids In Nature Network’s signature initiative, is a finalist in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2016.

Bronwyn Joslyn
Bron is a committee member of and the Resource and Professional Development co-ordinator for Environmental Education in Early Childhood ‘EEEC’.  Bron is also the Early Years Facilitator for Play Australia critically reflecting with professionals on the value of outdoor play for children and connecting with nature. Bron’s roles have included director of education and care settings, training manager of a registered training organisation while also writing and facilitating accredited and non-accredited training from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma of Children’s Services. In addition to the above roles, she is also a consultant and director of learning happens and director and teacher at Diamond Creek Memorial Kindergarten.

Dr. Barbara Chancellor
Barbara is the Managing Director of Outdoor Playspace Consultancy. With more than 35 years teaching experience in early childhood, primary and higher education sectors, Barbara now draws on her academic research and industry links to provide practical support to those responsible for provision of outdoor playspaces for children.  Barbara has an extensive body of scholarly research in the fields of children’s play, outdoor playspace design and management in school playgrounds, early childhood settings and public open spaces. She has several ongoing research collaborations with scholars in Australia and many other parts of the world, publishing in peer reviewed academic journals and books and regularly presenting her research in international forums. Barbara is a long standing Board member of Play Australia and member of the International Play Association.
