In Conversation with Theresa Casey Inclusive Play from a Child's Rights Perspective

Theresa Casey, former President of the International Play Association, is a Scottish writer and consultant for whom matters of play, inclusion and children’s human rights matter deeply. In this conversation, she will reflect on her early book Inclusive Play: Practical Strategies from Birth to Eight (SAGE 2010) which aims to provide tools for changes - big and small - to make sure children are included. We will consider inclusive play from a children's rights perspective and how place, policy and practice can enable inclusive play.

About Theresa Casey

Theresa is an independent consultant and writer on play, inclusion and children’s rights. Theresa’s playwork practice began in an adventure playground in Scotland which led to play development work in Thailand and an enduring belief in the right of all children to play no matter their circumstances. She has been deeply involved with the International Play Association (IPA) throughout her career, and in recent years has felt very enriched by her work on IPA’s Play in Crisis theme.
Theresa’s publications focus on resources for people who work with and care for children. This includes the popular Loose Parts Toolkit which remains the Thrive Outdoors (Inspiring Scotland) most downloaded and requested resource. She has also created resources and toolkits with Play Wales, Children’s Parliament, the Commissioner for Children and Young People Scotland, Children’s Play Policy Forum, Scottish Government and others.
She has an honours degree in painting and a post-graduate in playwork. As well as writing, she currently works part-time for her local county-level play association, working towards better and more inclusive play spaces.
